I have been fortunate enough to see first-hand the effect a book can have on a child’s life. We don’t often consider how valuable a single book can be. But one book can change a life.

I deliver books to many classrooms in high-need middle and elementary schools for my nonprofit, Breaking the Chain, and I usually have the opportunity to speak with the students who receive the books. It is impossible to adequately convey the joy and excitement expressed by the children when they see the books. As soon as their teacher allows them to, they run to the boxes and grab as many books as they can to take back to their desks. They smile, they laugh, they dance around. It’s better than a birthday party. Often, they’ll ask if they can take a book home to keep. Many have never owned a book of their own.

Those children are delighted to have a book in their hands for the pure enjoyment it brings to them. They aren’t aware of the frightening statistics about literacy; that a child will likely remain illiterate for the rest of their life if they don’t learn to read by age of 10, or that two-thirds of children who do not know how to read by the end of fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare. They don’t realize that knowing how to read will change their lives and give them the chance to choose their own destiny. They only know that they love books.

When I see the children who receive books from Breaking the Chain, I am always reminded how important reading has been in my life. From a very early age, my mom was reading to me and my brother. We were constantly surrounded by books. Books were like old friends and a constant source of entertainment; nothing else provided the same level of enjoyment and escape. As I grew older, I began to realize how much I gained from those books. I loved every book for a reason, each of them took me somewhere I had never been before, showed me a different perspective, or taught me something new. I learned who I am through books. I learned what I believe, what makes my nose crinkle in dislike, what makes my heart soar, what I aspire to be, and what I dream of.

I firmly believe that the most important thing we can do as a society is provide all children with a better future by teaching them how to read. All it takes is one book, one story, and a child becomes enthralled with the magic found only in books. Nothing else provides children with the escape that they crave and, no matter the topic, gives them a sense of wonder, adventure, and connection.

It only takes one book, one magical experience, and a child becomes a lifelong reader. The ability to read profoundly affects every minute of our lives; literacy is the single-most important component of becoming a functioning adult. As United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said, “Literacy is not just about reading and writing; it is about respect, opportunity and development.”

Literacy begins with a single book. Dreams begin with a single book.

So this week, share a story with a child you care about. There is no greater gift.

The Wind Stone Release and Huntington Beach

Hi all,

The Wind Stone, Book Three of the The Reign of the Elements series, was released on Monday, 2/21! Throughout the fall, my literacy nonprofit, Breaking the Chain, gave thousands of books to dozens of classrooms and schools around the country. The Wind Stone: Book Three of The Reign of the Elements will be released in a few weeks by BookLight Press. I’m very excited!

The new year is shaping up to be a busy one with lots of speaking engagements lined up. Most recently, I spoke at Denver School of Science and Technology: Green Valley Ranch. The students and teachers were fantastic. They were enthusiastic, inquisitive, and motivated. The school is very committed to reading and has made each of the students commit to reading 5,000 pages during the school year. Here are some pictures from my visit there:

I have a busy few months ahead. First, thank you so much Elizabeth! Check out her blog here. They are all written by talented authors, amazing people, and great bloggers who continually post helpful information and tips. Check out their blogs!

mysterywritingismurder.blogspot.com written by author Elizabeth Craig
mitaliblog.com written by author Mitali Perkins
annemazerbooks.com written by author Anne Mazer
debralschubert.blogspot.com written by author Debra Schubert
lynsouth.com/wordpress written by author Lyn South

Below are the ten requisite unusual facts about myself:

1) My older brother, Nick, is exactly one foot taller than I am. Just when I’m starting to feel tall while he’s away at college, he comes home and reminds me that although I’m 5’6” I am really quite hobbit-like next to him (without the hairy feet, of course).
2) I love Coldplay. It’s the only music that I can write to.
3) I have a Bernese Mountain Dog, Ben, who looks like a baby black bear. He’s about the size of one, too, at 125 lbs.
4) I am a terrible artist. Obviously, my creativity is limited to the written word.
5) I love history. It’s feels like one enormous story.
6) I love basketball and I’m a pretty decent three-point shooter.
7) I have an unhealthy obsession with The Lord of the Rings movies. I bet I could quote all three movies straight through. Extended editions.
8) The strangest thing I have ever eaten was sea urchin soup and the bowl was the actual sea urchin shell. I was eight years old, and believe me, it was not of my own choosing.
9) I only got my driver’s license because I bet my brother I would get it before I turned seventeen. I only got it last week, 10 days after I turned seventeen, so I guess I lost the bet.
10) Throughout elementary school, I was convinced that a magical being would appear and whisk me off to some far-off land and take me on a grand adventure. I guess when that dream wasn’t fulfilled, I decided to take matters into my own hands and write a story about one.

So there you have it. Check out those great bloggers and I’ll post again soon!

Until next time,
Riley

Florida Pitt Waller School

Hi all!

Today I spoke to the sixth-graders at Florida Pitt Waller School. Things have been busy, as usual :) - I've been in full writing mode working on the second book of my YA trilogy, as well as dealing with the commitments of my nonprofit, Breaking the Chain (and of course, schoolwork).

On Friday, February 12th, I visited KIPP Sunshine Peak Academy in Denver, Colorado, and spoke to four different classes of six graders there. KIPP is a great school and the kids were so interested and engaging! I loved being able to talk to them and to hopefully inspire them to do great things! Here are some pictures of the event:

I also have some more events coming up - I will be speaking at Denver Venture School on Wednesday, 2/17, Lewis Palmer Middle School on Friday, 2/19, and Kent Denver School, 3/1.

In other news, Breaking the Chain, my nonprofit for literacy, is launching a new program called Bookin'It. We're putting books into classrooms and in the hands of elementary and middle school students. KIPP was a recipient of our book donations, but we currently have 20 classrooms requesting books. Many people think that I must have a great deal of time on my hands to write, but it's not abundance of time that has allowed me to write six books in the past year and a half, rather it’s the ability to plan. I’ve read a lot of blogs and articles lately that discuss the writing process, and more specifically, whether to outline or not. Many people think that outlining ties you down and restricts your story.

I would argue just the opposite.

An outline is not a prison. It does not restrict the writer's movement or creativity. It is merely a tool to ensure that your story actually comes to life. Before I wrote The Fire Stone, I had struggled for several years to write the same story. I would write about seventy pages and then it would occur to me that I had absolutely no idea where I was going with it. I did that over and over until I realized that I needed to have a plan. Could it be that I needed an outline?

The outline is an often dreaded, and frequently maligned, writing tool. An outline forces the writer to come up with a plot. We hate it because we are forced to come up with a fully formed idea instead of flailing about for days and weeks and years on end. This is actually a good thing. Without a plot there is no story. An outline forces us to have a goal. It doesn't mean we're locked into anything, it just gives us some boundaries.

When I outline I start with a very bare-bones sketch of what I think might happen. Then, I begin to add to that skeleton, a little bit at a time. Eventually, I begin to put in details so that everything fits together, but also so that I can remember important things that I want to add to certain scenes. I outline the story chapter by chapter, allowing half a page to a page of prose to describe each chapter.

Other authors may do less or more when they outline, but the point of an outline is to have an idea of where I am going before I begin to write. That certainly doesn’t mean it’s set in stone. I have as much freedom as I want to add, delete, or change directions. I have changed major characters and added whole chapters to my story that weren't in my original outline. The story and the author still have complete control over where the story will go, but using an outline ensures that the story actually gets written. After the story is written, it can always be edited and tweaked until it feels right. The editing is easier than than the writing process. So, my writing motto is: "just get it on the page", and the only way the writing will always get on the page is with an outline.

So that's my answer to how I write so quickly. I don’t feel that outlining limits my creativity; I believe it expands creativity because I have the freedom to add new ideas into a story that actually has a point.

On a very different note, I would just like to add that it is so important that we not abandon the people of Haiti during this catastrophe. It is very difficult for them to get the aid they need to recover from the earthquake. To donate to the Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti, you can text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10. It will be automatically added onto your phone bill.

Please help if you can.

Until next time,

Riley

Chicago and Indianapolis and Other News

Hi Everybody!

I know I haven't posted for a while, but I was busy on a two week trip to Chicago and Indianapolis speaking at schools. It was an incredible trip - I gave 14 speeches and spoke to approximately 2,500 kids about my book, reading, and reaching out to help each other. It was great to see the kids get so excited about not only reading and writing, but about doing good in the world. Here are a few pictures from the trip:

With students at Attea Middle School in Glenview, Illinois

Speaking to students at Countryside Montessori in Northbrook, Illinois

Signing books at St. Pius X in Indianapolis, Indiana

At Amore Pizzeria in Zionsville, Indiana talking with a teen library group

I have several videos of speeches that I gave at schools and I will post them as soon as I can. (and follow me on Twitter)
2) It snowed 18 inches in Denver and melted two days later (typical Denver)
3) I finished the first book of my next series! (it's an urban fantasy trilogy, but that's all I can say about it...!)
4) I also read The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima. Here's the review:

The Demon King is an exciting and highly enjoyable read. In the fantasy world of the Seven Realms, transformed streetlord Han Allister is struggling to feed his mother and sister and stay out of the gang-life he abandoned. When hunting with his friends Dancer, Han comes across a group of wizards and takes a strange amulet away from them. Later, he discovers that it once belonged to the Demon King, the evil wizard who nearly destroyed the world thousands of years ago. With the amulet comes bad luck Han’s life changes from complicated to chaotic.

Meanwhile, Princess Raisa ana’Marianna is confronting her own set of problems. Her mother, the queen, is being heavily influenced by Gavan Bayar, the High Wizard who advises her. Raisa feels trapped in her own kingdom and begins to notice trouble brewing that no one else seems to notice.

Both Han and Raisa are strong, free-spirited characters. The secondary characters in the book are also engaging and it is easy to sympathize with all of them. The overlap of Han and Raisa’s lives is particularly interesting because the reader witnesses it through two points of view. I really enjoyed reading this book and found that in addition to the connection the reader has with the characters, the plot was intriguing and mysterious. I highly recommend The Demon King.

In other news, I’ll be speaking at Cherry Hills Village Elementary School here in Denver tomorrow morning and I will be signing books at their book fair next week. On November 19th, I will also be at the Koelbel Library Teen Writing group. I am more than halfway finished with my latest book, the first of an urban-fantasy trilogy for teens, and things are still going strong with The Fire Stone. I have an appearance at Prairie Winds Elementary School on Tuesday. But today, I thought I would do something different, so I wrote a review of one of my favorite books, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The sequel, Catching Fire, was released a few weeks ago. Both books are fantastic reads as you'll see below. Enjoy:

Imagine living in a world build upon the ruins of civilization, where twenty-three children are annually sentenced to death. The Hunger Games, a teen science-fiction novel by Suzanne Collins, takes place in the futuristic nation of Panem, built in the ruins of North America. Every year, two children between the ages of twelve and eighteen are selected as Tributes from each of the twelve districts to go to the capitol to compete in the Hunger Games, a brutal death match that leaves only one victor standing.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen saves her sister's life by stepping forward to enter the Hunger Games in her stead. Joining her from her district is Peeta Mellark, a boy who once saved Katniss from starvation. Katniss and Peeta are joined by the other twenty-two Tributes from the various districts at the Captiol, the ruling body that keeps strict watch other the districts. Sent to an arena with treacherous landscapes, the teenagers are forced to battle for their lives. Katniss is forced whether to fight for her survival or for her heart.

As Katniss narrates her heart-stopping story, the reader feels her raw emotions and experiences the perverse methods of control used by the Capitol. The violence of the Hunger Games is televised throughout Panem, and the Tribute that emerges alive from the brutal ordeal is awarded fame, fortune, and glory. The parallels that Collins draws between Katniss's world and our own provide an alarming illustration of the unsettling prevalence of violence in our own society. The barbarity that is so commonplace in the Hunger Games is constantly relfected in our culture through newspapers, magazines, television, books, and video games.

Collins pressures us to examine our society's emphasis on violence through this often gut-wrenching story. The destructive effect of violence on Katniss and the other teenagers is a battle that is currently being waged in the streets of American and around the world. The Hunger Games is an introspective look into our society and what it could become; the acceptance of violence in entertainment is the precursor for the application of violence in the real world. By creating and emotional, and very real connection to her characters, Collins entreats the reader to amend the tacit approval of violence. The first book of a trilogy, The Hunger Games leaves room for expansion upon and exploration of Panem society, promising to further thrill and challenge the reader.

So there's my review. I thought Catching Fire was even better and I would definitely recommend both books. They're probably for ages 13 and up.

Check back soon!

Riley

Amazon, Trade Show, and Upcoming Events

Hi Everybody!

I know it's been a while since I first posted, but things have been really busy. I went to show The Fire Stone and had my first author signing with the forty other authors that were there. Here's some pictures from the show:

Me with Patrick McDonnell who writes and illustrates the comic strip MuttsThe trade show

Me signing books

Me at our table

It was an amazing experience and I met a lot of great people!

In terms of future events, I'll be Koelbel Library in Greenwood Village, Colorado on November 19th to talk to the teen writing group there. I'll also be at the book fair at Cherry Hills Village Elementary School in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado in November, and others signings are currently being arranged. I'll post more information about all of these as we get closer.

Thanks for reading! My name is Riley Carney and I'm sixteen years old. I live in Colorado with my mom, dad, older brother, and our giant Bernese Mountain Dog, Ben. More than anything I love to read and write.

I wrote my first book, The Fire Stone, when I was fifteen. It took me about month to write the first draft and several months of editing followed. It's YA high-fantasy, for ages 11 and up most likely. It's currently available on my website rileycarney.com and is available for preorder on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com, though that should change in the next week or two. The Fire Stone follows the journey of Matt, a fifteen-year-old living in the world of Mundaria. A series of strange occurrences befall Matt and he is thrust from his ordinary life into a life of magic, danger, and adventure as he joins many unusual beings on a quest for the Stones of the Elements which have either the power to save or destroy his world. The rest of the five-book Reign of the Elements series is complete.

Here's a picture of The Fire Stone cover:

I'm planning on using this blog to post news about my book and appearances/signings or anything else I feel like sharing. I'll try to post at least once a week, probably more often if I can. Feel free to comment and I promise I'll answer you to best of my ability.

Thanks for reading and stop by again soon!

Riley
